Croquet Habit

from Homunculus Mellitus by Ben Paley

From my father, Tom Paley, who had it from Freeny’s Barn Dance Band, recorded in (I think) 1930 and still available on Volume 2 of the well known County compilation, Mississippi String Bands. He and I would play it together as a twin fiddle number. It’s a version of a song with many names, including Cocaine Habit, which makes a lot more sense. I will never tire of speculating on the series of events which led to the choice of croquet as the substitute for cocaine.
